Kia is a late but factory-CNG entrant in India, launching its first OEM-fitted CNG models (Carens and Carens Clavis) in late 2026, with no dealer-kit programme and no confirmed CNG SUV plans as yet.

Kia entered India's CNG segment in 2026, marking a significant strategic shift for the brand. The Carens and Carens Clavis MPVs became Kia's first factory-fitted CNG models in India, both powered by a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine producing a claimed 93hp and 123Nm in CNG mode. A single 60-litre CNG tank is positioned under the boot floor — an underbody arrangement that preserves cabin space while retaining 116 litres of boot volume. Kia has also retuned the suspension and brakes on these models to account for the additional weight of the CNG system. Claimed fuel efficiency is in the range of 22–25 km/kg (unverified at time of writing).
Prior to the Carens CNG launch, Kia India had no factory-fitted CNG offering, and the brand relied entirely on petrol, diesel, and electric powertrains. The move into CNG reflects the broader market reality that CNG was the second most popular fuel choice among Indian car buyers in FY26, and that Kia needed a credible answer to rivals like Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, and Tata Motors who have long offered factory CNG options across multiple segments.
Kia's CNG strategy is currently concentrated in the MPV space, with no confirmed plans at the time of writing to extend factory CNG to its SUV lineup (Seltos, Sonet, Syros). The brand has stated its intent to expand CNG availability across more models as the segment grows, though specific model names and timelines have not been officially confirmed. Kia manufactures its vehicles at the Penukonda plant in Andhra Pradesh, which is expected to handle CNG variant production domestically.
Kia does not currently offer or endorse dealer-fitted CNG kits for any of its models in India. Its CNG positioning is factory-first, targeting buyers who want the assurance of an OEM-backed system with full warranty coverage. The brand is simultaneously pursuing electrification (EV6, EV9, Syros EV, Carens Clavis EV) and a plug-in hybrid powertrain introduced in 2026, making CNG one pillar of a multi-fuel strategy rather than a standalone focus.
