Best CNG Car for a Large Family Looking to Save on Fuel Costs
The Maruti Ertiga VXi CNG (Rs 10,93,800) is the best CNG car for a large family: seven seats, 26.11 km/kg and about Rs 3.33 per km at Delhi's Rs 86.98/kg, against Rs 4.62 on petrol. The Maruti XL6 Zeta CNG (Rs 12,60,800) is a fraction cheaper to run at Rs 3.32 per km (26.23 km/kg) but seats six. The Toyota Rumion S CNG (Rs 11,69,000) matches the Ertiga's figures and pays back its Rs 92,000 premium in about 71,400 km. Kia publishes no certified CNG figure for the Carens or Carens Clavis CNG, so their running cost cannot be calculated.
For a large family that wants to cut its fuel bill, the best CNG car in India is the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga VXi CNG at Rs 10,93,800: seven seats, a certified 26.11 km/kg, and a fuel cost of about Rs 3.33 per km in Delhi against Rs 4.62 for the same car on petrol. The Maruti XL6 Zeta CNG (Rs 12,60,800) is a fraction cheaper per km at Rs 3.32, thanks to its 26.23 km/kg, but it seats six. The Toyota Rumion S CNG (Rs 11,69,000) has the Ertiga's figures and the shortest payback of the three. Kia's new Carens and Carens Clavis CNG seat seven too, but Kia publishes no certified CNG figure, so their running cost cannot be worked out yet.
We assumed CNG at Rs 86.98 per kg, IGL's retail price for Delhi from 29 August 2026, and petrol at Rs 94.77 per litre, Indian Oil's Delhi retail price in its price build-up effective 1 March 2026. Change either and every per-km figure below moves with it. Cost per km is the fuel price divided by the certified figure. The petrol column uses each car's certified manual petrol figure: 20.51 km/l for the Ertiga and Rumion and 20.90 km/l for the XL6. Payback distance is the CNG premium divided by the per-km saving. Prices are ex-showroom, checked October 2026: Maruti's from the Arena and NEXA price pages, Toyota's from its online price list for a New Delhi dealer, and Kia's from the Carens and Carens Clavis pages on kia.com. Expect real-world figures to be lower than certified ones with a full cabin and the AC on, for petrol and CNG alike.
How we built this list
A car qualified if it seats six or more and is sold with a factory-fitted CNG kit as its own variant with a published ex-showroom price. That gives five cars from three makers. We left out retrofitted kits, which sit outside the carmaker's warranty. The Maruti Eeco did not qualify, because Maruti's price page lists its CNG version as a 5-seater only.
Every efficiency and output figure comes from the maker's own brochure or specification page. Kia's brochure and specification pages for both Carens models list the CNG engine's output and tank sizes but no certified km/kg figure, so we have not estimated one. No maker here publishes boot space for its CNG variants either, so we have not quoted any.
What a year of driving costs
At certified figures and the Delhi prices above, here is the fuel bill for the three cars we can calculate.
| Car | 15,000 km a year on CNG | Same on petrol | Saving | 25,000 km a year on CNG | Same on petrol | Saving |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ertiga and Rumion | Rs 49,969 | Rs 69,310 | Rs 19,341 | Rs 83,282 | Rs 1,15,517 | Rs 32,235 |
| XL6 | Rs 49,741 | Rs 68,017 | Rs 18,276 | Rs 82,901 | Rs 1,13,361 | Rs 30,460 |
So the payback is long. At 15,000 km a year, the Ertiga's Rs 98,500 premium takes about five years to recover and the XL6's about five and a half. The Rumion's smaller Rs 92,000 premium brings it under five. A family that covers 25,000 km a year gets there in roughly three years. If your driving is mostly short school runs, CNG is a slower win than the brochure figure suggests.
Prices outside Delhi change the picture. In Gurugram, where IGL charges Rs 92.01 per kg, the Ertiga's CNG cost rises to Rs 3.52 per km, and in Noida at Rs 95.59 it is Rs 3.66.
1. Maruti Suzuki Ertiga CNG: lowest price for seven seats
CNG variants: VXi CNG Rs 10,93,800, ZXi CNG Rs 12,00,000.
The Ertiga is the cheapest way into a seven-seat factory CNG car, and at Rs 0.48 per seat per km it is also the cheapest per passenger. The CNG engine is the 1,462 cc K15C, rated at 64.6 kW (87.8 PS) and 121.5 Nm in CNG mode and 74.0 kW (100.6 PS) and 137.1 Nm in petrol mode, with a 5-speed manual only. Tanks are 45 litres of petrol and 60 litres water-equivalent of CNG.
The CNG version gives a few things up, and Maruti's brochure lists them. The third row still splits 50:50 and reclines, but the CNG variants lose the third-row flat fold and the split luggage board, which matters for a family that sometimes folds the third row for luggage. Idle start-stop goes too, and the CNG car is heavier, at 1,270 to 1,275 kg against 1,175 to 1,225 kg for the petrol. Second-row AC vents and third-row AC with 3-stage control are on both CNG trims. The ZXi CNG adds automatic climate control, a rear parking camera and a USB-C charger for the third row; cruise control is reserved for the petrol ZXi+.
Six airbags and ESP are standard on every variant.
2. Maruti Suzuki XL6 CNG: lowest cost per km, six seats
CNG variant: Zeta CNG Rs 12,60,800.
The XL6 is the most efficient CNG car here at 26.23 km/kg, which puts it at Rs 3.32 per km. In practice the difference from the Ertiga is about Rs 230 a year at 15,000 km, so buy it for the cabin, not the fuel bill. The Zeta CNG has second-row captain seats with one-touch recline and slide, second-row AC vents, third-row AC with stage control, cruise control, and 60W USB Type-C chargers in both rear rows, all listed in the brochure.
The XL6 CNG keeps the third-row flat fold, unlike the Ertiga CNG, and loses only the split luggage board. It uses the same CNG engine outputs and 45-litre plus 60-litre tanks as the Ertiga. It has no seventh seat, and it costs Rs 1,67,000 more than the Ertiga VXi CNG.
For more on the XL6 CNG, see our XL6 CNG model page.
3. Toyota Rumion CNG: Ertiga figures, shorter payback
CNG variant: S MT CNG Rs 11,69,000.
The Rumion shares the Ertiga's engine and certified figures: 26.11 km/kg on CNG and 20.51 km/l on petrol, from Toyota's own brochure. It costs Rs 75,200 more than the Ertiga VXi CNG, but its CNG premium over the petrol S MT (Rs 10,77,000) is Rs 92,000, which is why it pays back in about 71,400 km rather than 76,400. If you have already decided on CNG, compare the Rumion against the Ertiga on the final price, not the payback.
The Rumion CNG has a 60:40 second row with one-touch recline and slide, a 50:50 reclining third row, a second-row console AC vent and third-row AC with 3-stage control. Toyota lists six airbags as standard, and a warranty of 3 years or 1,00,000 km, extendable to 5 years or 2,20,000 km. As with the Ertiga, the split luggage board is not offered on the CNG version.
4. Kia Carens Clavis and Carens CNG: seven seats, no certified figure
CNG variants: Carens Premium (O) CNG Rs 12,11,800; Carens Clavis HTE CNG Rs 12,38,800 and HTE (O) CNG Rs 13,34,800.
Both Kia CNG cars use the naturally aspirated SmartStream G1.5 with a 6-speed manual. Kia's Clavis brochure rates it at 70.6 kW (96 PS) and 123.2 Nm in CNG mode, with a 45-litre petrol plus 60-litre CNG tank. That is the most power in CNG mode on this list, which helps with seven people aboard. The Clavis CNG also gets roof-flushed AC vents for the second and third rows with 4-stage speed control, a second row that slides, reclines and tumbles, and a third row that reclines and folds flat. Kia lists a fire extinguisher on CNG models and drops the luggage board and idle stop-and-go.
The problem for a fuel-cost buyer is that Kia's brochure and specification pages give no certified km/kg figure, so the saving cannot be calculated. For scale: if it returned 22 km/kg, it would cost Rs 3.95 per km at Delhi prices, and it would need to reach 26.11 km/kg just to match the Ertiga. Until Kia publishes a number, treat the Carens CNG as the choice for buyers who want its cabin, and not as the economy pick.
Which one to buy
Buy the Ertiga VXi CNG if you need seven seats and the lowest outlay. Step to the ZXi CNG if the rear camera and automatic climate control are worth Rs 1,06,200. Buy the XL6 Zeta CNG if six seats are enough and the second-row captain seats, cruise control and third-row flat fold matter on long trips. Choose the Rumion if a Toyota dealer is closer or the final price works out lower. If your annual distance is under about 10,000 km, run the payback numbers above before paying for CNG at all; the petrol car may be the cheaper one to own over five years.
Frequently asked questions
Which CNG car is best for a large family on a budget?
The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga VXi CNG, at Rs 10,93,800, is the cheapest seven-seat factory CNG car on sale. It is certified at 26.11 km/kg, which works out to about Rs 3.33 per km at Delhi's Rs 86.98 per kg.
How much does a large family save by choosing CNG over petrol?
In the Ertiga or Rumion, about Rs 1.29 per km at Delhi prices and certified figures, or Rs 19,341 a year at 15,000 km. In the XL6 it is Rs 1.22 per km, or Rs 18,276 a year. The CNG variants cost Rs 92,000 to Rs 98,500 more than their petrol twins, so the premium takes about 71,000 to 81,000 km to recover.
Is the XL6 CNG more fuel efficient than the Ertiga CNG?
Slightly. Maruti's brochures certify the XL6 at 26.23 km/kg and the Ertiga at 26.11 km/kg. The figure of 26.32 km/kg sometimes quoted for the XL6 does not match its current brochure.
What is the mileage of the Kia Carens CNG?
Kia has not published a certified CNG figure for the Carens or the Carens Clavis in its brochure or on its specification pages. Any km/kg number you see quoted is not from Kia's own documents.
Do 7-seat CNG cars keep their luggage space?
None of these makers publishes a boot figure for its CNG variants. Maruti's brochure does say the Ertiga CNG loses the third-row flat fold and the split luggage board, and Maruti, Toyota and Kia all drop the luggage board on their CNG versions.
