CNG position

Maruti Suzuki is the commanding volume leader in India's factory-fitted CNG segment, with the broadest model range and the highest CNG retail volumes of any automaker in the country.

CNG strategy

Maruti Suzuki is India's dominant CNG vehicle manufacturer, offering the largest factory-fitted CNG portfolio in the country. As of 2024, the brand fields 13–14 CNG models spanning hatchbacks (WagonR, Swift, Celerio, Baleno), sedans (Dzire), crossovers (Fronx), compact SUVs (Brezza), and MPVs (Ertiga, XL6), covering both its mass-market Arena and premium Nexa retail channels. All Maruti CNG variants are factory-fitted, ensuring warranty coverage, OBD integration, and consistent quality control across its vast service network.

A key differentiator in Maruti's CNG strategy is underbody tank placement, most notably on the Brezza CNG, which mounts the CNG cylinder beneath the floor to preserve full boot space — a significant advantage over conventional boot-mounted twin-cylinder setups used on smaller models like the WagonR and Swift. The Brezza CNG is also the only compact SUV in India with a factory CNG option, reinforcing Maruti's first-mover advantage in the segment. Larger models such as the Ertiga and XL6 use a single-cylinder boot-mounted arrangement paired with the 1.5-litre K15C engine.

Maruti Suzuki held a claimed ~69 percent share of India's CNG passenger vehicle market in the April 2023–January 2024 period, retailing over 2.5 lakh CNG units in just ten months of FY2024. The company has publicly stated it expects CNG vehicles to account for roughly one-third of its total sales by the end of this decade, signalling a long-term commitment to the fuel type as a bridge between conventional petrol and full electrification.

The brand continues to expand CNG availability across trim levels and body styles, including AMT-equipped CNG variants on select models, and has extended factory CNG to its Nexa premium channel with the Baleno, Fronx, and XL6. Maruti's unmatched dealership and service footprint across India — including in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities — combined with the growing CNG dispensing infrastructure, positions it as the default choice for cost-conscious buyers seeking factory-warranted CNG mobility.
