At a typical CNG pump price of ₹75–80 per kg in major metros, this translates to a running cost of roughly ₹2.8–3.0 per km — compared to approximately ₹6–7 per km for the petrol mild-hybrid variant. Over 1,500 km a month, the CNG variant can save upwards of ₹4,500–6,000 in fuel costs versus the equivalent petrol trim.

Owner-reported real-world CNG mileage, as aggregated by Autocar India, averages around 17.91 km/kg — a meaningful gap from the ARAI figure, as is typical with CNG vehicles tested under standardised lab conditions. Real-world figures depend heavily on city traffic density, AC usage, and driving style. Even at the real-world figure, the per-km cost remains significantly lower than petrol.

For context, the strong-hybrid petrol variant achieves 27.97 km/l (ARAI) and around 22 km/l in real-world tests — impressive, but at a price premium of ₹3+ lakh over the CNG Zeta. The CNG variant is the sweet spot for high-mileage urban commuters who have reliable CNG infrastructure nearby.

CNG kit, tank, and boot space

The Grand Vitara's S-CNG kit is factory-fitted by Maruti Suzuki on the production line, not installed at the dealership. This is a critical distinction: factory fitment means the full manufacturer warranty (3 years / 1,00,000 km, as stated by Autocar India) remains intact, and the kit meets OEM quality and safety standards. There is no separate kit cost or warranty caveat to worry about.

The CNG cylinder is mounted inside the boot, unlike the Maruti Victoris (the Arena-channel sibling) which places its CNG tank under the body floor. This placement has a direct impact on cargo capacity. The standard petrol Grand Vitara offers 373 litres of boot space; with the CNG cylinder fitted, usable space is significantly reduced. CarDekho's expert review notes that in the CNG model, it is best to use 3–4 smaller (preferably soft) bags, as the tank and its cover take up most of the boot floor.

Buyers who regularly carry large suitcases or bulky cargo should factor this in carefully. The Grand Vitara CNG uses the same 1,462 cc naturally aspirated petrol engine as the mild-hybrid variant, tuned for CNG operation and producing 89 bhp. It is paired exclusively with a 6-speed manual transmission — no automatic option is available on the CNG variants. On CNG, performance is adequate for city driving and relaxed highway cruising, but the engine does feel less responsive than on petrol — a characteristic common to all CNG-converted engines due to the lower calorific value of compressed natural gas. Overtaking at highway speeds requires planning ahead, and the absence of an automatic transmission means city stop-start traffic demands more driver involvement.

The Grand Vitara's sorted suspension setup — praised by Autocar India's expert review — translates to a comfortable ride regardless of fuel mode. The 5.4-metre turning radius aids urban maneuverability, and the FWD layout keeps the driving dynamics predictable.

Cabin, space, and tech

Despite being a CNG variant, the Grand Vitara Delta CNG and Zeta CNG do not feel stripped-down. The Delta CNG gets a SmartPlay Pro+ touchscreen (7-inch), cruise control, rear camera, LED headlamps, and Suzuki Connect with 40+ connected features including remote AC on/off via app, vehicle tracking, and Alexa voice control. The Zeta CNG steps up to a 9-inch touchscreen, ventilated front seats, alloy wheels, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and a part-digital instrument cluster.

The cabin seats five with a wheelbase of 2,600 mm providing reasonable rear legroom for a mid-size SUV. The panoramic sunroof — a segment highlight — is available on higher petrol and hybrid trims but not confirmed on the CNG variants. The layered dashboard with chrome accents and leather touches gives the interior a premium feel consistent with the Nexa brand positioning.

Suzuki Connect's 3-year free subscription is a genuine value-add, offering smartwatch connectivity, trip and driving behaviour sharing, and safety alerts — features typically found on more expensive SUVs.

Safety and ADAS

All Grand Vitara variants, including the CNG models, come with 6 airbags as standard — driver, front passenger, side, and curtain airbags. Additional safety hardware includes ABS with EBD, Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), Hill-Hold Assist, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), all-wheel disc brakes, and ISOFIX child-seat mounts. The Suzuki TECT platform is engineered to absorb and distribute collision energy.

The Grand Vitara has not been rated by Bharat NCAP or Global NCAP as of the time of writing. The Grand Vitara CNG's closest factory-fitted CNG SUV rival is the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder CNG, which shares the same platform and powertrain and is priced similarly. The Tata Nexon CNG is another factory-fitted option but uses a different architecture and is priced in a comparable bracket. The Hyundai Exter CNG is a smaller, more affordable sub-compact CNG SUV.

Within Maruti's own lineup, the Maruti Victoris CNG (Arena channel) offers the advantage of an under-floor CNG tank that preserves boot space — a meaningful differentiator for families. The Grand Vitara CNG counters with the Nexa premium experience, better feature content at equivalent prices, and the panoramic sunroof availability on petrol trims that signals the brand's positioning.

The Grand Vitara CNG is best suited to urban and semi-urban buyers who cover 60–100 km daily in cities with good CNG infrastructure — Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, and similar metros. The factory-fitted kit, full warranty, and 26.6 km/kg claimed efficiency make the running cost argument compelling over a 3–5 year ownership horizon.

Buyers who need a large boot for frequent road trips, or who want an automatic gearbox, should look at the petrol mild-hybrid or strong-hybrid variants instead. Similarly, buyers in cities without dense CNG networks should weigh the infrastructure risk carefully.
