CNG mileage and running cost

The Hyundai Exter CNG returns a claimed ARAI figure of 27.1 km/kg, which is among the highest in the sub-4-metre compact SUV segment. With CNG prices in major Indian cities hovering around ₹75–90 per kg (as of mid-2026), the per-kilometre running cost works out to roughly ₹2.8–3.3 — less than half the cost of running the petrol variant at current fuel prices. Over a daily commute of 50 km, a buyer can expect to save upwards of ₹1,500–2,000 per month compared to the petrol Exter.

The bi-fuel setup means you are never stranded: the 37-litre petrol tank serves as a full backup when CNG stations are unavailable. The 60-litre water-equivalent CNG tank (dual cylinder, underbody) gives a practical CNG range of approximately 400–450 km on a full fill at claimed efficiency, making it viable for weekend highway runs, not just city commutes.

The premium over the equivalent petrol variant is approximately ₹1.20 lakh (comparing HX 3 CNG at ₹7.43 lakh vs HX 3 petrol MT at ₹6.23 lakh). At typical urban usage, this premium is typically recovered within 18–24 months of ownership purely through fuel savings.

CNG kit, tank, and boot space

Hyundai's Hy-CNG Duo is a company-fitted, factory-installed system — not an aftermarket or dealer-fitted kit. The dual cylinders are mounted entirely under the floor of the vehicle, a layout Hyundai calls the first of its kind in the compact SUV segment. This means the boot floor is not raised and the loading lip remains at the same height as the petrol variant.

The result is 225 litres of boot space with the CNG system active — a significant advantage over rivals that use a single in-boot cylinder and typically sacrifice 100–150 litres of luggage room. The spare wheel is also relocated to an underbody mount in CNG variants, freeing up additional boot floor area. The 60-litre water-equivalent CNG storage is split across the two underbody cylinders.

Because the kit is factory-fitted, the standard Hyundai warranty (3 years / unlimited km, extendable to 7 years) applies in full to the CNG system. There is no separate warranty caveat or exclusion for the CNG components, unlike dealer-fitted aftermarket kits.

Performance on CNG

The 1.2-litre Kappa engine produces 68 bhp and 95.2 Nm of torque when running on CNG, compared to 82 bhp and 113.8 Nm on petrol. The drop of approximately 14 bhp is consistent with what CNG does to naturally aspirated engines and is in line with segment norms. In city traffic, the power deficit is barely noticeable; on highways above 100 km/h, the engine does feel breathier.

All CNG variants are offered only with a 5-speed manual gearbox — there is no AMT option on CNG. The clutch action and gear throws are the same as the petrol MT, and the switchover between CNG and petrol is seamless via a dashboard-mounted toggle.

The Exter's 185 mm ground clearance is unchanged between petrol and CNG variants, and the underbody cylinder placement does not reduce clearance meaningfully in real-world use. The suspension tune is also shared, so ride quality — which reviewers have praised as well-balanced for city and highway use — is identical across fuel types.

Cabin, space, and tech

The 2026 Exter's cabin gets a premium dual-tone Navy and Grey interior theme with a new 3D carbon-pattern dashboard finish, a D-cut steering wheel, new seat upholstery, and a folding driver armrest (standard from HX 6 onwards). Hyundai claims the Exter is the tallest SUV in its segment with the longest wheelbase, translating to generous knee room and headroom for rear passengers.

Technology highlights include wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay (standard from HX 4 onwards), a segment-first dual-camera dashcam recording both front and rear views (standard from HX 6 onwards), Type-C USB ports at the rear, and a wireless smartphone charger (standard from HX 8 onwards). The top petrol variants get Hyundai's Bluelink connected car suite with more than 60 features and an 8-inch HD audio-video navigation system, though Bluelink is not offered on CNG variants below HX 8.

The segment-first metal pedals add a sporty driver-focused touch, and the new R15 diamond-cut alloy wheels are available as an add-on. Rear AC vents are present, and the electric sunroof is standard from HX 4+ upwards in petrol — check variant-specific fitment for CNG trims.

Safety and ADAS

The Exter CNG carries 4 airbags as standard across all variants — driver, passenger, side, and curtain. Autocar India notes that some sources cite 6 airbags on higher variants; the official Hyundai data confirms 4 as standard. ABS with EBD, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Vehicle Stability Management (VSM), Hill-start Assist Control (HAC), and impact-sensing auto door unlock are all standard across the entire range.

Hyundai claims more than 30 standard safety features and more than 45 advanced safety features on the Exter. The segment-first dual-camera dashcam (front and rear) is a notable addition for incident documentation. ISOFIX child seat anchors are standard on all variants, and all-seat 3-point seatbelts with a reminder system are fitted throughout the range.

The Exter has not been rated by Bharat NCAP or Euro NCAP as of the time of writing. Buyers who prioritise a crash-test rating should note this gap; the Tata Punch, a key rival, holds a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating.

The Punch CNG uses a single in-boot cylinder, reducing boot space significantly; the Exter's 225-litre CNG boot is a clear advantage. The Fronx CNG is factory-fitted and similarly practical, but the Exter undercuts it slightly on entry CNG pricing and offers more segment-first features like the dashcam and metal pedals.

The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios CNG is a cheaper alternative at a lower price point but is a hatchback with less ground clearance and a smaller footprint. The Exter's 185 mm ground clearance and SUV stance give it a meaningful edge for buyers who want a CNG car that can handle broken roads and occasional rough terrain.

On mileage, the Exter CNG's claimed 27.1 km/kg is competitive with the Punch CNG (claimed 26.99 km/kg) and the Fronx CNG (claimed 28.51 km/kg). The Fronx edges ahead on claimed efficiency, but the Exter's underbody cylinder layout and larger boot make it the more practical daily proposition for families.

Who should buy it

The Hyundai Exter CNG is the right choice for buyers who want a compact SUV with genuine CNG practicality — specifically, those who refuse to sacrifice boot space for fuel savings. The underbody Hy-CNG Duo system is the single biggest differentiator in the segment, and the factory fitment means full warranty coverage with no aftermarket risk.

It suits urban families, daily commuters covering 40–80 km per day in CNG-infrastructure-rich cities (Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad), and first-time SUV buyers stepping up from a hatchback. The absence of an AMT on CNG variants means buyers who want an automatic must look at the petrol range. Those who prioritise a crash-test safety rating should also weigh the Tata Punch CNG's 5-star Bharat NCAP score against the Exter's currently unrated status.
