CNG mileage and running cost

The Tata Tiago iCNG's real-world efficiency story is compelling. Autocar India tested the CNG-AMT variant over a mixed city-and-highway cycle at an average speed of 47.8 km/h and recorded 33.33 km/kg — a figure that translates to a tank range of over 320 km on a full fill of the twin 30-litre (60 L water capacity) cylinders. This is well above the claimed range of 26–28 km/kg that owners and reviewers commonly cite, suggesting the Tiago CNG rewards steady, moderate-speed driving.

At a CNG pump price of approximately ₹90–95/kg in major Indian cities (September 2026), a full tank costs roughly ₹540–570 and delivers 320+ km of range. By comparison, the petrol Tiago at 19–20 km/l and petrol at ~₹105/litre would cost around ₹1,575 for the same distance. The CNG version's per-kilometre cost is therefore roughly one-third that of petrol — a saving that can recover the ₹1.10–1.25 lakh premium over the equivalent petrol variant within 40,000–50,000 km for a typical city commuter.

Tata recommends driving the Tiago on petrol for around 10 km after every 300 km of CNG usage to maintain fuel-system health and prolong engine life — a minor operational discipline that most CNG owners will find easy to follow.

CNG kit, tank, and boot space

The Tiago iCNG uses Tata's proprietary twin-cylinder iCNG technology, with two 30-litre cylinders (60 L combined water capacity) mounted beneath the boot floor rather than upright inside the luggage area. This is a factory-fitted system installed on the production line — not a dealer-fitted or aftermarket kit — and the full manufacturer warranty of 3 years / 1,00,000 km applies without any caveats.

The safety architecture around the CNG system is extensive: a single Advanced ECU manages seamless switching between CNG and petrol, a Micro Switch cuts the ignition if the fuel lid is opened while the engine is running, Thermal Incident Protection guards against heat-related risks, and a Leak Detection Feature monitors for gas escapes. The car also supports Direct Start in CNG mode, eliminating the need to start on petrol and switch over — a convenience that rivals with older CNG systems do not always offer.

Boot space in litres for the iCNG variants is not officially stated by Tata (the brochure shows '---' for this figure and the CNG page describes it only as 'Uncompromised Boot Space'). The petrol Tiago offers 242 litres. Autocar India's review confirms the CNG boot can accommodate one cabin bag and a few smaller soft bags, and notes that unlike the petrol variant, the CNG model does not get a parcel shelf. A spare wheel is provided on both versions.

Performance on CNG

On CNG, the Tiago's 1.2-litre Revotron engine produces 75.5 PS at 6000 RPM and 96.5 Nm at 3500 RPM — down from 86 PS and 113 Nm on petrol, a reduction of about 12% in power and 15% in torque. This is typical for a bi-fuel CNG setup and is most noticeable during hard acceleration, overtaking on highways, or climbing steep flyovers.

In city driving, the performance deficit is largely imperceptible. The AMT variant, in particular, manages the power delivery smoothly enough that Autocar India described the pickup as 'impressive even in CNG mode, which is quite rare.' The 5-speed manual CNG variants are responsive in urban traffic, and the light steering and compact 3,813 mm length make the Tiago easy to place in congested lanes.

Ground clearance on the iCNG is 168 mm — 2 mm less than the petrol's 170 mm — due to the under-floor cylinder placement. In practice, this difference is negligible for typical Indian road conditions. The CNG AMT variant does not get Cruise Control (available on petrol AMT Pure+ and above), which is a minor but notable omission for highway users.

Cabin, space, and tech

The 2026 Next Gen Tiago brings a substantially upgraded interior. All variants get the Fabricia Luxe dashboard, a Sportluxe steering wheel with mounted controls, and a fully digital instrument cluster. The Pure+ and above variants add a 20.32 cm touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while Creative CNG gets the larger 26.03 cm Ultra View HD touchscreen. The Pure+ A CNG and Creative CNG variants add Fully Automatic Temperature Control (FATC), Passive Entry Passive Start (PEPS), rear AC vents, and a front armrest.

The Tiago is a five-seater with a 2,400 mm wheelbase. Rear-seat comfort is respectable for two adults, though a third passenger will find the space tight — as is typical in this segment. Rear passengers in Pure+ A and above CNG variants benefit from dedicated AC vents. The cabin's new bolstering and cushioning improve seat comfort over the previous generation, and visibility all around remains a Tiago strong suit thanks to its upright glasshouse.

The top CNG variant — Creative CNG (MT) — adds autofold and electrically adjustable ORVMs with turn indicators, a cooled glovebox, and Lux Beam LED headlamps with integrated LED DRLs. The Creative+ variant (with iRA connected car features and wireless charging) is not available in CNG, so CNG buyers top out at Creative trim.

Safety and ADAS

The 2026 Tiago CNG carries 6 airbags as standard across all variants — a segment-leading safety baseline that includes front, side, and curtain airbags. The safety suite also includes ABS with EBD and Corner Stability Control (CSC), Electronic Stability Program (ESP) with Traction Control, Hill Hold Control, ISOFIX child-seat anchors, and iTPMS (tyre pressure monitoring). The body structure uses Ultra High Strength Steel with a 360° Impact Protection design.

Autocar India notes the Tiago earned a 4-Star Global NCAP rating (body tested under the Global NCAP protocol). No Bharat NCAP rating has been published for the 2026 generation at the time of writing. The Tiago does not offer ADAS features — no autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, or adaptive cruise control — which is consistent with its price positioning but is a gap compared to some newer entrants in adjacent segments.

The Creative and above CNG variants add a 360° Surround View System (SVS) with HD camera and multiple 3D/2D views, plus a Blind View Monitor — useful safety aids for urban parking and lane changes, even if they fall short of full ADAS.

CNG variants and pricing

The Tiago CNG range spans six variants priced from ₹5.80 lakh to ₹7.99 lakh (ex-showroom). All CNG variants use the 5-speed manual gearbox except the Pure CNG AMT, which adds the AMT option at ₹7.05 lakh — a ₹55,000 premium over the Pure CNG MT. The Creative CNG MT at ₹7.99 lakh is the top CNG variant and adds LED headlamps, a 26.03 cm touchscreen, 360° SVS, autofold ORVMs, and a cooled glovebox. The Creative+ variant is not offered in CNG.

AMT variants across the combined petrol and CNG range command a premium of ₹51,000–66,000 over their manual counterparts, per Autocar India's launch coverage. The CNG line-up's ₹1.10–1.25 lakh premium over equivalent petrol variants is in line with segment norms for factory-fitted iCNG systems.

How it compares

The Tiago CNG's closest factory-CNG rivals are the Maruti Celerio CNG (34.43 km/kg ARAI, smaller 998 cc engine, ₹4.70–6.75 lakh), the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios CNG, and the Tata Altroz CNG. Against the Celerio CNG, the Tiago offers more power (75.5 PS vs ~57 PS), a larger body, 6 airbags standard (vs 2 on base Celerio), and the AMT-CNG combination — but the Celerio's ARAI mileage figure is higher. Against the Altroz CNG, the Tiago is more affordable and offers the AMT option, while the Altroz has a more premium cabin and a larger boot.

The Tiago CNG's unique selling points in the segment are: India's first CNG hatchback with AMT, 6 airbags standard on all variants, Direct Start in CNG mode, and a twin-cylinder under-floor tank that preserves more usable boot space than a single upright cylinder. No direct rival currently matches all four of these simultaneously at this price point.

Who should buy it

The Tata Tiago CNG is the right choice for urban and semi-urban buyers who cover 1,200 km or more per month and have reliable CNG infrastructure nearby. At 33.33 km/kg real-world efficiency and a full-tank range exceeding 320 km, the running cost advantage over petrol is substantial and the break-even point is achievable within two to three years of typical city use.

The Pure CNG AMT at ₹7.05 lakh is the standout variant for buyers who want the convenience of an automatic gearbox without paying petrol-AMT prices — it is a segment-first combination. Buyers who need maximum boot space, ADAS features, or the top Creative+ trim should look at the petrol Tiago or consider the Tata Altroz CNG. But for value-focused, high-mileage city commuters who want factory safety and a modern cabin, the Tiago CNG remains one of the most complete propositions in the entry hatchback segment.
