CNG position
Tata Motors is a factory-CNG volume contender, offering five models with twin-cylinder tank technology and turbocharged engines, actively expanding CNG into higher segments and premium trims.
CNG strategy
Tata Motors has emerged as one of India's most aggressive factory-CNG players, offering a five-model CNG lineup spanning hatchbacks, sedans, and SUVs. The current portfolio includes the Tiago, Tigor, Altroz, Punch, and Nexon — all equipped with factory-fitted CNG systems, with no reliance on dealer-fitted aftermarket kits. Tata positions this breadth as a deliberate strategy to drive the "premiumisation of CNG," pushing the technology into higher segments and feature-rich trims rather than limiting it to entry-level variants.
A key technological differentiator for Tata is its twin-cylinder CNG tank architecture, which places two smaller cylinders in the boot rather than a single large cylinder, preserving usable boot space. The Nexon CNG, launched in late 2024, became the first CNG car in India to feature a turbocharged petrol engine (1.2-litre turbo, claimed 100 hp and 170 Nm in CNG mode), paired with a 6-speed manual or optional AMT gearbox. The Altroz CNG is claimed to deliver up to 27.8 kmpl, among the highest in the segment.
Looking ahead, Tata Motors has confirmed that a CNG version of the Curvv coupe-SUV is "under active consideration," with the company stating that the Curvv's design has been protected for CNG integration. The 1.2-litre turbo-petrol (non-GDI) is the expected engine for any future Curvv CNG. This would make the Curvv the only model in the midsize SUV segment to potentially offer petrol, diesel, EV, and CNG powertrains simultaneously.
All Tata CNG models are factory-fitted and BS6-compliant, with pricing (as of mid-2026) ranging from approximately ₹4.57 lakh for the Tiago CNG to ₹14.15 lakh for the Nexon CNG (ex-showroom, claimed figures). Tata's CNG strategy is tightly integrated with its broader multi-powertrain approach, sitting alongside its EV ambitions rather than competing with them.
