CNG mileage and running cost

The Toyota Rumion S CNG carries an ARAI-certified mileage of 26.11 km/kg, which is among the highest figures in the 7-seater MPV segment. At a typical CNG pump price of ₹90–95/kg in major Indian cities, this translates to a running cost of roughly ₹3.4–3.6 per kilometre — compared to approximately ₹5.0–5.5 per km for the petrol variant at current fuel prices. For a family covering 2,000 km a month, the monthly fuel saving over petrol can exceed ₹3,000–4,000.

The Rumion's bi-fuel capability means you are never stranded if CNG is unavailable. The car carries a 45-litre petrol tank alongside the 60-litre (water equivalent) CNG cylinder, giving a combined theoretical driving range of over 1,100 km. Toyota's E-CNG system integrates the CNG management electronically with the engine ECU, enabling smoother fuel switching compared to aftermarket kits.

Over a 5-year ownership horizon, the CNG premium of roughly ₹92,000 over the equivalent petrol S MT (₹10.77 lakh vs ₹11.69 lakh) can be recovered in approximately 18–22 months for a buyer covering 1,500–2,000 km per month — making the CNG variant financially attractive for high-mileage urban users.

CNG kit, tank, and boot space

The Rumion's CNG kit is factory-fitted by Toyota Kirloskar Motor on the production line under the E-CNG technology banner. This is not a dealer-retrofitted or aftermarket installation — the kit is integrated at the factory, preserving the full 3-year/1,00,000 km manufacturer warranty without any caveats. The CNG cylinder has a water-equivalent capacity of 60 litres, which is a competitive size for this class.

The cylinder is mounted under the boot floor in the third-row area, which does impact luggage access. Boot space with all three rows in use is 209 litres — identical to the petrol variant's figure with all rows up, as the cylinder is packaged beneath the floor rather than in the boot cavity itself. However, the raised boot floor means tall or bulky items may not fit as easily. With the third row folded, the petrol Rumion offers 550 litres; the CNG variant's usable space with the third row folded will be somewhat reduced due to the cylinder packaging.

The Rumion S CNG retains the cabin-boot access pass-through, which is useful for loading longer items. The car also features a cabin-boot access feature listed in its specification sheet, allowing some connectivity between the passenger cabin and the boot area.

Performance on CNG

In CNG mode, the 1462 cc K-series engine produces 88 hp at 5500 rpm and 121.5 Nm of torque at 4200 rpm — a reduction of about 12 hp and 14.5 Nm compared to petrol mode. This is a typical trade-off for factory CNG systems and is noticeable primarily during overtaking manoeuvres or steep inclines. City driving, where the Rumion is most commonly used, feels adequately brisk.

The 5-speed manual gearbox is the only transmission option on the CNG variant; there is no automatic available with CNG. The gearbox is well-suited to urban stop-go traffic, with a light clutch action inherited from the Ertiga platform. Hill Hold Assist is standard, which helps on inclines when pulling away in CNG mode where low-end torque is slightly reduced.

The Rumion's front MacPherson strut and rear torsion beam suspension setup is tuned for comfort over outright handling. The additional kerb weight of the CNG variant — approximately 1,250 kg versus 1,175–1,200 kg for the petrol MT — is perceptible but does not significantly affect ride quality. The electric power steering is light and easy to manoeuvre in tight city spaces, with a turning radius of 5.2 metres.

Cabin, space, and tech

The Rumion is a genuine 7-seater with three rows of seating. The second row benefits from dedicated console AC vents, while the third row gets its own AC with 3-stage control — a feature that distinguishes it from some competitors. The dual-tone seat fabric and flexible seating layout make it practical for both daily commutes and weekend family trips.

On the technology front, the S CNG variant gets Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity via a 17.78 cm SmartPlayCast audio system. Toyota's connected car suite — available on higher petrol trims — includes smartwatch connectivity, climate control, lock/unlock, find-my-car, remote immobilisation, tow alert, and remote start/stop. The S CNG trim's exact connected-car feature set should be confirmed at the dealership, as some i-Connect features are grade-specific.

Practical convenience features on the S CNG include power windows (front and rear), electrically adjustable exterior mirrors, 12V power outlets, speed-sensing door lock, child safety locks, door ajar warning, low fuel warning, and bottle holders in all rows. The Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) is available on the Rumion range. The instrument cluster uses analogue dials with a digital MID showing average speed, fuel consumption, and distance to empty.

Safety and ADAS

The Toyota Rumion comes with 6 airbags as standard across all variants, including the S CNG. This is a segment-leading safety baseline for an MPV at this price point. Additional safety hardware includes ABS with EBD, Brake Assist, Hill Hold Assist, front disc brakes, and rear drum brakes. The Heartect platform underpinning the car is engineered for improved crash energy absorption.

The Rumion has not been tested by Global NCAP or Bharat NCAP as of the time of writing, so no star rating is available. The speed warning buzzer — which sounds two beeps per minute above 80 km/h and continuous beeps above 120 km/h — is standard across all variants as mandated. There are no ADAS features (lane keep assist, autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control) on any Rumion variant; this is a notable gap versus newer entrants like the Kia Carens.

The full Rumion range spans ₹9.79 lakh to ₹14.21 lakh across 8 variants, but the CNG option is available only at the S trim level.

The S CNG is available in five colour options: Enticing Silver, Spunky Blue, Rustic Brown, Iconic Grey, and Cafe White. Toyota's standard warranty of 3 years/1,00,000 km applies, with extended warranty available up to 5 years/2,20,000 km. Express Maintenance service (60-minute turnaround) is available at Toyota's 826+ touchpoints across 435 cities.

How it compares

The Rumion S CNG's closest rival is the Maruti Suzuki XL6 CNG (₹11.57–14.53 lakh), which shares the same Ertiga platform and engine but offers a 6-seater layout with captain seats. The XL6 CNG is also factory-fitted and returns a similar claimed mileage. Buyers who need 7 seats will prefer the Rumion; those who want the premium 6-seat layout may lean toward the XL6.

The Kia Carens CNG is a stronger rival on features — it offers ADAS, a larger touchscreen, and more variant choices — but starts higher and does not offer a factory CNG option at the same price point. The Renault Triber CNG is cheaper but smaller and less premium. Against the Maruti Ertiga CNG (₹8.85–12.99 lakh), the Rumion offers Toyota's dealer network and brand assurance at a modest premium.

Who should buy it

The Toyota Rumion S CNG is best suited to families of 5–7 in cities with good CNG infrastructure — Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Pune, and Surat being the prime markets. High-mileage users (1,500 km/month or more) will recover the CNG premium quickly and benefit from significantly lower running costs over the ownership period.

Buyers who prioritise automatic transmission, ADAS safety features, or a larger infotainment screen should look at petrol variants of the Rumion or consider the Kia Carens. Those who want a factory-warranted, 7-seat CNG MPV from a trusted Japanese brand at under ₹12 lakh will find the Rumion S CNG a hard proposition to beat in its segment.
